Ins & Outs of the Student Government

To be a student at SDSU - Imperial Valley Campus is much more than full time studies and a part time job.  It entails being member of the student body and working for issues that affect your ability to get a degree and find a job after college. We work together with the university to maintain the quality of our education.  Every year a group of committed students work hard in the student government representing our educational interest.  Our student government, Associated Students at SDSU - Imperial Valley Campus, is a strong independent organization, and we plan to keep it that way.  We're being listened to, and we impact the legislation affecting higher education.
We, the Associated Students, manage the student union and provide numerous programs and services , we assist campus clubs, organizations and university departments in providing needed services and entertainment to the student body.  Additionally, we provide numerous programs and services such as the Welcome Back, Spring and Fall events, holiday events, Final's Week Activities, the annual fun trip and Dinner-Dance for the graduates.  Our annual operation budget is approximately $54,000.  We are approached by campus clubs, organizations, and university departments for financial support and require the use of our budget.

Associated Students Makes a Difference at SDSU and in Our Community

Being active in the student government is being able to apply leadership. It also develops skills that university courses do not teach. As a student representative you learn skills such as time management, consensus building, negotiation and decision making.
You develop relationships that will help your career. Not only that, but you get the exposure  to the movers and the shakers in San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus and through the community.
You'll improve your study skills. You'll also learn to manage multiple tasks and reach the goal desired within a reasonable time frame.
The back-bone of the student government are the boards and committees of the A.S. and the numerous campus clubs and organizations that work hard to provide services and entertainment to the students.

Involvement in the Associated Students

There is always something to do at the A.S.C. the daily operations of the Student Union is guided by student boards and committees. They determine content and direction of the programs and services and the use of allocated funds.
Joining a club or organization is a great way to start. Applications for membership in committees and clubs are available at the A.S.C. office. All openings are posted at the A.S. Government Office. Each board and committee is headed by a Commissioner who is appointed by the President with the approval of the council. Commissioners serve without compensation and all the work is done on a voluntary basis.
The Cultural Arts and  Special Events Commissioner plans and coordinates special events and cultural programs.
The Events Commissioner coordinates and administers programs policies and regulates content and direction for leisure and recreational activities.
The Elections Commissioner manages all A.S. elections.
The Spirit Commissioner initiates and monitors recruiting and retention programs as well as student involvement and participation in campus activities and events.

We work closely with Student Affairs at SDSU- I.V. Campus to expand and improve student services. The services include student health and counseling, career and scholarship information, social activities and campus information as well.
Within the governing process at SDSU-I.V. Campus, there are several authority boards where we appoint student representatives. These boards are advisory boards to the Dean of the campus and establish policies and procedures.
The A.S. representatives work with faculty and staff to ensure that our educational needs are met, that the available funds are used to our benefit and that the university's departments support the student community.
