This M.S. degree in Business Administration consists of 10 courses that can be completed in one year. It prepares students from a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, cultures, and experiences with the skills necessary to assume leadership roles in business. A student with this degree will be able to do business in the domestic and global economies. Many courses are offered in the new executive format to accommodate working professionals.
The International Business programs at San Diego State University combine training across several functional disciplines to provide a comprehensive background in the skills required for international business success. The degree requires 30 to 49 units of coursework covering a business core, electives, and a variety of courses in international business.
The M.S. has two components: prerequisites and program courses.
The prerequisites consist of foundation courses in statistics, financial and managerial accounting, organizational behavior, managerial economics, marketing, operations management, and financial management. A student with an undergraduate degree in business may be eligible to waive some or all prerequisite courses.
The M.S. in Business Administration will prepare graduates for the real world which awaits them upon graduation, a globalized world in which success is dependent upon the ability to excel in a rapidly changing environment. It is a world with disappearing borders in which the boundaries of success are unlimited. Contemporary business is no longer domestic business. Successful companies are globalized companies. And successful managers are those with international perspectives.
The M. S. in Business Administration enriches the students' education in two distinct ways. First, the prerequisites of the program include at least one course in every functional area of business. This component instills in the students a general knowledge and understanding of business and gives them the required core courses. Second, the program includes ten courses with strong international emphasis. This component will prepare the students for functioning in the global environment. The academic part of the program is greatly enhanced by frequent site visits to some of the most international production operations in the world, the maquiladoras of Mexicali, Mexico. Finally, students benefit from the practical experience of studying on a campus which is within walking distance of an international border and a community which itself is a living laboratory of international business.
Job opportunities for the graduates of this program are almost limitless. The need for managers with a worldwide focus to their education will continue to increase as more businesses further internationalize their operations. The globalization process not only includes sales and marketing, but also the manufacturing and financial sides of business which have been two of the fastest growing sectors of business in recent years.
