Dr. Altamirano’s area of expertise is literature from the Spanish Middle Ages and Golden Age, especially the manifestations of oral tradition, and the interaction between popular and cultivated culture in the literary works of the period. She has also studied the Mexican corrido and its relationship with other ballad forms. Dr. Altamirano is currently working on a research project entitled The Other Side of Early Hispanic Literature: Popular Lyrics and Ballads from the Spanish Middle Ages and Golden Age.
